Messinia and the wine, a long history.

The land of Messinia as a viticultural area is one of the best areas of the Peloponnese. Apart from the other climate and soil conditions, this is due to the fact that the largest part of the area is, southerly and westwards, exposed to the sea and thus the marine breeze affects beneficially the quality of the grapes.

Moreover, Messinia has been a viticultural area since Antiquity, a fact that is proven by various references on several regions of Messinia, which testify the tradition in wine production. Homer for example, refers to the region of Methoni (Old Pidasos) and characterizes it as verdant of vines. Also, when Telemachus was hosted by the king of Pylos, Nestoras, it is mentioned that the guests drunk wine in golden cups. And let us not forget about last but not least, Pavsanias. In his work “Messiniaka” there are a lot of references to Messinia.
